November 12, 2013Monterey County Deputy Public Guardian Jennifer Empasis alleged that Patricia Conklin financially abused her mother, Margarita Zelada. Margarita clearly stated that Patricia did not abuse her in any way. No financial abuse charges were filed. However, the Public Guardian refused to terminate the conservatorship of Margarita’s estate.
The estate is valued at about $1.5M The Public Guardian keeps Margarita confined and isolated at Senior Paradise in Del Rey Oaks, California. Margarita has been allowed to see Patricia only twice since March 2013.

A Tribute to Veteran Gary E. Harvey
November 12, 2013A wife’s loving tribute to her husband, Gary Harvey – Veteran and unfortunately trapped in an abusive guardianship. Currently, Gary is confined to a hospital room and denied all visitation from family, friends, advocates – even clergy. The guardian does not keep his wife informed of his medical condition and blocks all her efforts to advocate for his best interest and his preferences.
Please pray for Gary’s continued strength and that he will be allowed the comfort and the love of his wife.

ABC Action News: Who is William Bercheau?

William Bercheau started our investigation into the professional guardian program in Florida when the ABC Action News I-Team discovered he was placed in an Alzheimer’s unit, even though there was strong evidence he didn’t belong there.
Since then, we’ve been digging deeper… preparing to reveal what we discovered in a series of stories starting Monday.
William Berchau was born in Lithuania in 1914.
He fled to Germany during Joseph Stalin’s rise to power, then immigrated from Germany to the United States to escape Adolph Hitler’s regime.
Berchau had a long career as an employee of the Illinois Central Railroad. He and his wife retired in Clearwater, Fla.
Shortly after her death in 2010, he attempted to sell his house and was soon taken into the Florida Guardian Program.
Patricia Johnson was appointed his professional guardian late that year. He has tried to have her removed on several occasions, to no avail.

YouTube Video Alleging Elder Abuse Probed
February 4, 2013A YouTube video purporting to show elder abuse at the University Town Center in Irvine gained attention online last week and sparked a police investigation.
In the clip, the unseen videographer confronts a man who has wheeled an elderly woman to the passenger-side door of a Toyota Prius.
“Is this your mom? Why do you exploit her?” he asks.
However, Irvine police say they’ve been aware of the video since a few days after it was posted Dec. 5.
“None of this is news to us. We were a month into this investigation before anyone was talking about it,” Irvine police spokeswoman Lt. Julia Engen said.
Both Adult Protective Services and Irvine police have spoken to the woman and man shown in the video as part of a cooperative investigation, the lieutenant said.
Police are still digging but Engen said they’ve so far found no indication of foul play.
Despite the dramatic exchanges, “What you see on that video, there’s no evidentiary value there,” Engen said.
