Mary G. Sykes Speaks Out for What She Wants
January 17, 2012Mary G. Sykes Speaks Her Mind
January 13, 2012Gloria J Sykes and Mary G Sykes at a “visit” with mom, which was “allowed” by the Probate court–but only with a “supervisor” because allegedly Gloria is “dangerous” and her mother is “incompetent.” (This is according to GAL’s Adam Stern, attorney, and Cynthia Farenga, attorney.) Interestingly enough the voice in the background is Tom, an ordained minister providing comments and advice to Gloria and Mary.

Watch Mary G Sykes speak her mind and what she wants done. Amazingly enough, she is supposed to be incompetent and her GAL’s Adam Stern GAL and Cynthia Farenga GAL have conveniently arranged a guardianship where her desires are NOT being carried out. She wants to live at home and have her daughter Gloria care for her in Mary’s home until she dies. Carolyn Toerpe had her execute a will where once Mary’s home is sold the proceeds are put in Trust and Carolyn Toerpe takes it all upon Mary’s death. Now Carolyn Toerpe has had Mary declared incompetent and is seeking to have both Mary’s home and Gloria’s home sold and the proceeds put in Carolyn’s trust. All of this has been done under the authority of the Probate Court of Cook County and GAL’s Cynthia Farenga Attorney and Adam Stern, Attorney. This proves that evil never sleeps.

December 31, 2011Two Utah Nurses Fired for Taping Woman’s Mouth Shut
December 29, 2011
Two nurses in a Utah hospital’s intensive care unit were fired this week for taping a patient’s mouth shut and laughing about it, hospital officials said.
Artalejo’s daughter, Brittany Bilson, told the television station that her mother’s teeth were chattering and she was moaning and shaking. Bilson said the nurses told her mother to shut up, taped her mouth closed and joked they would be fired if they were caught.
Penny Artalejo was admitted to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo on Dec. 17 with nausea and anxiety from taking medication for chronic neck pain, her daughters told Utah radio station KSL.com.
“It’s not right. It’s inhumane,” Bilson said. “We put our loved ones’ lives in their hands. I left the hospital basically thinking she’s fine from here, and just more bad happened.”

Disabled Man Suffers Severe Burns at Group Home
December 19, 2011A disabled man was critically burned while left in the shower at a care facility. Now police are investigating, and his guardian wants answers.
Twenty-two-year-old Donzell Harden suffered third-degree burns on the lower half of his body at a Bellevue group home. He’s now in the Nebraska Medical Center’s burn unit.
Harden’s guardian, Sherry Becker, has some tough decisions to make. But, Becker said, Harden shouldn’t be suffering. She said it could have been prevented.
Born prematurely, Harden has been disabled his entire life. He’s blind, doesn’t walk or talk and is unable to use his arms.
On Friday, paramedics rushed Harden to a hospital with severe burns. Police said a staff member left him alone in the shower while she helped a coworker on a computer.
“He was being scalded. He couldn’t do anything. He can’t move. He can’t even cover himself,” Becker said.
The owner of Hands of Heartland, Courtney Kline-Hays, said, “This is an isolated incident. There is one person involved. We are conducting our own internal investigation.”
“Human error happens. We have put in safety measures to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Kline-Hays said.

Investigation Reveals Failures in Protecting Oklahoma Nursing Home Residents
November 27, 2011
Nurses who used to work at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Tulsa describe it as a house of horrors.
“There was verbal abuse, physical abuse, lots of things reported,” said Rita Rodriguez, a former nurse at Rest Haven.
She says Rest Haven was an unsafe environment that, even after complaints, never got better. She listed some of the worst offenses.
“The rats, the roaches, the filth,” said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez had been a nurse at Rest Haven for a couple of years when another veteran nurse, Toby Dale, began working there this year.
“I’ve seen patients that were covered in maggots, that you know was taken to the showers, tub area, and put into a vat of water with half a cup of bleach and dipped, kind of like a dog,” said Dale.
Both nurses say Rest Haven was the worst nursing home they’ve ever worked in and say it should have been shut down years ago. They called the Oklahoma Impact Team after they were fired from Rest Haven, they say, for alerting the state to patient abuse.
“They really don’t care about the residents,” said Dale. “They just, they belittle them. They make fun of them. They talk about them. They cuss them.”
“It was just a whole lot of patient abuse that never was dealt with,” said Rodriguez.
Inside Rest Haven, nursing home staff told our undercover producers Rest Haven was a happy place where residents were well taken care of. But the hallways and facilities were dirty and smelly and at one point, an employee blocked off a patient room to keep our producers from looking inside.
